SUPPLEMENTS: Hormones, Vits and Minerals

THE SUPPLEMENT PROGRAM OF AN 85-year-old, RETIRED SURGEON

With G Elizabeth Harry, PhD, Prof. emerita, U Miami

Here I am, an old, ex-Urologist-turned-hormone-balancer! For the past 10 months, I have been pontificating via SUBSTACK, re. hormones, hormone balancing and metabolism (plus a few other, completely unrelated, issues)…….. and I have only just realised a glaring omission: I have made no mention of what supplements I take, nor have I solicited the wisdom, re. supplements, of the many other SUBSTACK–affiliated MDs, from whom perhaps, I might learn much!

I do not have a set, scientific plan for supplementation, but each of the items below is related in some way to my gender, age, etc.: see below.

The need for Hormonal, Vitamin, Mineral and/or individually-necessary supplements varies by gender, age, lifestyle and location; so I must, to start with, admit to being an 85-year-old, fairly athletic male surgeon, who used to be 5’ 10 ½” tall, currently weighs 171 pounds, smokes 2-3 cigarettes daily in spite of known, age-related reduction of renal function, takes a beer every afternoon, drinks a glass of wine with dinner and has a family history of Alzheimer’s disease. (If you have a particular interest in the fine detail of my health history, see (here).

I am a Toronto-trained Urologist. I practiced in downtown Toronto, from 1977 to 1997, when I went to Saudi Arabia as chief of Urology at the Armed Forces (teaching) hospital in Tabuk. Returning to Toronto in Y2000, I switched to family practice. In 2007, began to prescribe Hormone Restoration Therapy and in 2012, I became a member of the American Academy of Antiaging Medicine [A4M]. I successfully wrote the A4M's written examination in December, 2013 and In May, 2016 I passed the oral examination, for accreditation as a BHRT consultant. In 2014 I began BHRT practice in Collingwood, Ontario and in January, 2017, joined the Stone Tree Naturopathic Clinic. Now I am 85 and retired, but it seems wasteful to jettison my learning and experience: the medical establishment knows nothing of BHRT / Functonal medicine and I feel obliged to offer my knowledge in the interest of those who are willing to think outside the box.
